The Fifth Framework Programme (FP5) is the European Union's research technological development and demonstration (RTD) programme for the period 1998-2002. The FP5 site sets out the EC priorities for this programme. These priorities have been selected on the basis of a set of common criteria reflecting the major concerns of increasing industrial competitiveness and the quality of life for European citizens.

Within FP5, the Information Society Technologies Programme (IST Web) aims to stiumulate the development in Europe of technologies and applications at the centre of the the Information Society in order to increase the competitiveness of European industry and allow European citizens to benefit from the development of hte knowledge-based economy. This four-year, 3.6 BEuro (£2.5 billion), programme funds research into information and communication technologies, systems, applications and services through collaborative projects involving organisations from the public sector, research, academia and industry.

CLUK is a broad-based organization for computational linguists and NLP researchers in the UK, with no theoretical presuppositions except that text is important, difficult and generally a good thing.
