14th March The 2002 Distinguished Lecture in Artificial Intelligence
and Cognitive Science was given by Professor James Hendler of the
University of Maryland on "The Semantic

A new website dedicated to Human Language Technology (HLT) is launched
this week at
http://www.itri.brighton.ac.uk/projects/euromap.
Euromap Language Technologies in the UK is geared to providing a service
for HLT researchers and developers to help facilitate the path-to-market
for new HLT applications.
UK Euromap is a branch of a Europe-wide EC funded project, which is devoted to the development and marketing of Human Language Technologies (HLT). The UK Euromap site provides news and views from this fast-growing sector, with items of interest to developers, new media entrepreneurs and potential users of HLT.

Success story! Euromap Language Technologies in the UK has
produced a case study showing the successful use of Adam Kilgarriff's
WordSketch software, developed at ITRI, in the production of the new
Macmillan/Bloomsbury English Learner's Dictionary. The case study can
be viewed here.
We are glad to welcome Rob Koeling to ITRI. Rob is a Research Fellow and will work on the WASPS project.

December 2001 We say farewell to Nadjet Bouayad-Agha, who completed her PhD thesis this autumn as well as working on a series of ITRI projects. We wish her well! Congratulations to Carole Tiberius on a successful viva of her PhD thesis!

September 2001 Tony Hartley leaves ITRI after many years of fruitful collaboration to take the new Chair of Translation Studies in the School of Modern Languages at Leeds University, where he will be Director of the Centre for Translation Studies. We offer him our congratulations and all success in this prestigious new post!
August 2001 We are happy to announce the appointment of John Clinton, our
new Senior Research Adminstrator, and Leigh Dodd, our new system manager.
We welcome Alexandre Direne, who joins us on sabbatical for a year
from the Federal University of Parana in Brazil, where he was Head of
the Computer Science Department.

We say a sad farewell to Francesca Carter, our Senior
Research Adminstrator, Paul Spandler, our Systems Manager, and Helen
O'Connor, our Administrative Assistant, and wish them all the best in
their new jobs.
June 2001 We welcome Amy Neale to ITRI in her role as Market Development Analyst working on the HOPE project.
April 2001 We are delighted to welcome Irina Chugur to ITRI as a
visiting student from Departamento de Lenguajes y Sistemas
Informaticos, UNED, Madrid. She will be working with Adam Kilgarriff
until July.

Fellow at the Insitute. The appointment will take effect from August

The PILLS
project starts, in collaboration with the University of Freiburg (Germany)
and Berlitz GlobalNet (UK). This one-year project will assess
the need for a multilingual authoring tool for healthcare documents
and develop a prototype that demonstrates the feasibility of this
enterprise.
We are delighted to announce the arrival of Helen O'Connor as
administrative assistant to replace the much-missed Helen Hinchcliffe!

The ITRI has expanded to include part of the first floor of the WATTS building (the area directly under the current offices). The administrative offices, the library and some staff/student offices will be located in the new area.
The ICONOCLAST project organises a AAAI Fall Symposium on Using Layout for the Generation, Understanding or Retrieval of Documents, which was held Nov 5-7 in Massachusetts.
The RAGS project hosts a two-day workshop in Edinburgh at which 14 invited speakers consider how their systems could be recast in terms of the current RAGS architectural specification.

There are two upcoming GNOME-related
workshops at the ESSLI'99 Summer
School, one organised by Rodger Kibble and Kees van Deemter on Generating
Nominal Expressions and one on Deixis,
Demonstration and Deictic Belief in Multimedia Contexts for which
Massimo Poesio is one of the organisers.
Employees and students of the University of Brighton can access ITRI news (and much more) via the electronic NEWSLETTER (latest issue dated 28 July 1998).
We are hosting two major events at the end of the summer: ECAI-98 at the Brighton Centre and the SIGLEX SENSEVAL workshop at Herstmonceux Castle.
All of our new projects have now started up and will gradually provide a web presence. So far the only new project page is for AGILE which now has its own home page.
We are also very pleased to welcome Sylvia Webb and Neil Tipper to the Institute as new staff.
