May 2003 Recently awarded new research projects at ITRI:

October 2002 The new MSc course in Lexical Computing and Lexicography, has now started. Many of the modules on this course are also available as individual short courses as well.

14-19 July 2002 Following its successful launch last year, ITRI once again hosted lexicom@itri, a hands-on training workshop in Lexicography and Lexical Computing.

July 2002 We are delighted to welcome to ITRI a new PhD student from China, Yin Ling.

March 2002 14th March The 2002 Distinguished Lecture in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science was given by Professor James Hendler of the University of Maryland on "The Semantic Web". Further details can be found here. A new website dedicated to Human Language Technology (HLT) is launched this week at http://www.itri.brighton.ac.uk/projects/euromap. Euromap Language Technologies in the UK is geared to providing a service for HLT researchers and developers to help facilitate the path-to-market for new HLT applications.

UK Euromap is a branch of a Europe-wide EC funded project, which is devoted to the development and marketing of Human Language Technologies (HLT). The UK Euromap site provides news and views from this fast-growing sector, with items of interest to developers, new media entrepreneurs and potential users of HLT.

February 2002

Success story! Euromap Language Technologies in the UK has produced a case study showing the successful use of Adam Kilgarriff's WordSketch software, developed at ITRI, in the production of the new Macmillan/Bloomsbury English Learner's Dictionary. The case study can be viewed here.

We are glad to welcome Rob Koeling to ITRI. Rob is a Research Fellow and will work on the WASPS project.

December 2001 We say farewell to Nadjet Bouayad-Agha, who completed her PhD thesis this autumn as well as working on a series of ITRI projects. We wish her well! Congratulations to Carole Tiberius on a successful viva of her PhD thesis!

We welcome our new administrative assistant, Anja Wedberg, and hope she will be very happy here.

September 2001 Tony Hartley leaves ITRI after many years of fruitful collaboration to take the new Chair of Translation Studies in the School of Modern Languages at Leeds University, where he will be Director of the Centre for Translation Studies. We offer him our congratulations and all success in this prestigious new post!

August 2001 We are happy to announce the appointment of John Clinton, our new Senior Research Adminstrator, and Leigh Dodd, our new system manager.

We welcome Alexandre Direne, who joins us on sabbatical for a year from the Federal University of Parana in Brazil, where he was Head of the Computer Science Department.

July 2001 From 16-20 July 2001, ITRI hosted lexicom@itri, a hands-on training workshop in Lexicography and Lexical Computing, in collaboration with the Lexicography Masterclass.

We say a sad farewell to Francesca Carter, our Senior Research Adminstrator, Paul Spandler, our Systems Manager, and Helen O'Connor, our Administrative Assistant, and wish them all the best in their new jobs.

June 2001 We welcome Amy Neale to ITRI in her role as Market Development Analyst working on the HOPE project.

April 2001 We are delighted to welcome Irina Chugur to ITRI as a visiting student from Departamento de Lenguajes y Sistemas Informaticos, UNED, Madrid. She will be working with Adam Kilgarriff until July.

March 2001At the end of the month, the RAGS Project came to a successful conclusion.

February 2001 We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Anja Belz as Research Fellow at the Insitute. The appointment will take effect from August 2001.

The CLIME achieved a very successful final assessment: many congratulations to everyone involved!

January 2001 The PILLS project starts, in collaboration with the University of Freiburg (Germany) and Berlitz GlobalNet (UK). This one-year project will assess the need for a multilingual authoring tool for healthcare documents and develop a prototype that demonstrates the feasibility of this enterprise.

We are delighted to announce the arrival of Helen O'Connor as administrative assistant to replace the much-missed Helen Hinchcliffe!

Kees van Deemter will give an invited talk at an International Workshop on Reference and Coherence in discourse: Formal, Functional and Cognitive approaches, to be held in Utrecht, January 10-12, 2001. Further details and a call for abstracts may be found here (deadline 27th October).

Adam Kilgarriff is to organize a workshop Comparing Corpora at ACL 2000 in Hong Kong.

Congratulations to Nadjet Bouayad-Agha and Daniel Paiva, who have had their papers accepted in the Student Session of ACL 2000!

June 2000 An upcoming conference is Coherence in Generated Multimedia, 12 June 2000, Mitzpe Ramon, Israel. This is a workshop associated with the International Natural Language Generation Conference (INLG-2000, 13-16 June).

April 2000 ITRI successfully hosted the 3rd Annual CLUK Research Colloquium on the 6th and 7th of April. Well done, Carole!

February 2000 In collaboration with Emiel Krahmer of IPO, Paul Piwek of ITRI will be running a course entitled "Varieties of Anaphora" at the ESSLLI summer school this August in Birmingham. Further details of the course can be found here.

November 1999 Francesca Carter joins us in the newly created post of Senior Research Administrator.

The ITRI has expanded to include part of the first floor of the WATTS building (the area directly under the current offices). The administrative offices, the library and some staff/student offices will be located in the new area.

The ICONOCLAST project organises a AAAI Fall Symposium on Using Layout for the Generation, Understanding or Retrieval of Documents, which was held Nov 5-7 in Massachusetts.

The RAGS project hosts a two-day workshop in Edinburgh at which 14 invited speakers consider how their systems could be recast in terms of the current RAGS architectural specification.

October 1999 Jon Herring joins the ITRI as a PhD student. The seminar programme for Fall 1999 is available.

September 1999 David Tugwell joins ITRI as a Research Fellow on the WASPS project.

July 1999 Simon Shurville receives his PhD, and Lesley Binks receives her MPhil. Congratulations!

June 1999 Helen Hinchcliffe joins us as Administrative Assistant.

3 May 1999 Kees van Deemter has been promoted to Principal Research Fellow.

Spring 1999 Adam Kilgariff and Roger Evans have received funding for the WASPS project.
Chris Douce and Sylvia Dieseal left ITRI. We wish them both good luck in their new jobs. Markus Fisher and Jenny Norris completed their PhDs. Congratulations Dr. Fisher and Dr. Norris! Helen Blakelock will be joining us in June as Administrative Assistant, by which time she will be known as Helen Hinchcliffe.

There are two upcoming GNOME-related workshops at the ESSLI'99 Summer School, one organised by Rodger Kibble and Kees van Deemter on Generating Nominal Expressions and one on Deixis, Demonstration and Deictic Belief in Multimedia Contexts for which Massimo Poesio is one of the organisers.
28 January 1999 The RAGS project is organising a Workshop on Reference Architectures and Data Standards for NLP as part of the AISB'99 Convention to be held in Edinburgh, 6-9 April 1999. 20 January 1999 Seminar programme for Spring 1999 published.

22 September 1998 The 1998 Distinguished Lecture in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science takes place on 7 October 1998 at 6pm, in the Sallis Benney Theatre, Brighton. The speaker will be Professor Geoffrey Nunberg (Xerox Palo Alto Research Center and Stanford University) and his topic will be ``Does Cyberspace have Boundaries?''.

September 1998 Christine Doran joins the ITRI as a Research Fellow.

10 July 1998 The RAGS project now has its own home page. We recently welcomed Paul Piwek and Lynne Cahill to the institute, and said goodbye to Duncan Sanderson and Fari Zahedi.

We are hosting two major events at the end of the summer: ECAI-98 at the Brighton Centre and the SIGLEX SENSEVAL workshop at Herstmonceux Castle.

5 May 1998 Seminar programme for Summer 1998 published.

7 April 1998 We are very pleased to announce that Sue Atkins has been appointed as a visiting fellow at the Institute.

All of our new projects have now started up and will gradually provide a web presence. So far the only new project page is for AGILE which now has its own home page.

We are also very pleased to welcome Sylvia Webb and Neil Tipper to the Institute as new staff.
