TITLE: VARIETIES OF ANAPHORA
VENUE: 12th ESSLLI summerschool - Birmingham
TYPE: Introductory
SECTION: Language
DURATION: 1 week (14-19 August 2000)
DESCRIPTION: A whole range of phenomena have in recent times been analysed in terms of anaphoricity. The aim of this course is to study what makes the notion of an anaphor so attractive for the analysis of such diverse phenomena, and which formal tools are benificial for the analysis of anaphoric relations. To answer this question, we bring together recent work with both empirical and formal orientations. Starting point is the basic treatment of anaphoric pronouns in Discourse Representation Theory (DRT). In a number of stepwise refinements it is shown how the DRT analysis of pronouns can be generalized so as to apply to tense, presuppositions, noun phrases of all kinds, bridging phenomena, VP anaphora and accentuation.
PREREQUISITES FOR STUDENTS:
There are no special prerequisites for this course,
but elementary knowledge of Discourse Representation
Theory and its applicability for presuppositions and anaphors will be
beneficial. In this respect we can particularly recommend the course on
Presupposition (Geurts).
